2026 Summer Travel Guide – Rutherford Napa

[April 1, 2026] A Private Collector’s Guide to Rich History, Golden Hour Sunsets, Perfect Itineraries

There are rare places in the world where heritage, scarcity, and sensory experience converge seamlessly – and Rutherford, California is one of those places. Known for its legendary “Rutherford Dust” Cabernet Sauvignon and deeply rooted winemaking history, this pocket of Napa Valley offers something increasingly rare: access to the makers. At the center of this experience is Steve Tonella, S.R. Tonella Cellars — a fourth-generation vintner, hand crafting a piece of history in every glass. At his appointment-only winery, guests step into over a century of Napa Valley lineage and taste wines crafted from estate benchland vineyards.

This summer, invited guests will become inspired when visiting with Steve Tonella as he shares stories of the Tonella family, pioneers of the Napa Valley wine industry for 100 continuous years. Rutherford remains one of the last places in Napa Valley where true access still exists quietly.

Not everything is listed.
Not everything is available.
And that is precisely the point.

At the center of that world is S.R. Tonella Cellars—we share limited production wines and extend a personal invitation into legacy

Why Rutherford — Why Now

The Rutherford AVA of Napa Valley remains one of the few places where true access still exists behind the scenes. Not crowded tasting rooms. Not transactional experiences. But private, story-driven encounters with winemakers who have shaped Napa Valley for generations.

The Core Experience: Private Tasting at S.R. Tonella Cellars

A visit here is not a tasting — it’s a conversation with history.

Guests are hosted for curated tastings in caves or overlooking the Napa Valley and can schedule a Top of the Morning Winemaker Tasting at 8:30 am for the perfect start to the day. Winemaker hosted visits include vineyard storytelling tied to a family legacy dating back to early Napa pioneers with over 100 continuous years in the wine business.

Experiences range from limited release tastings to Cult Cabernet verticals. Wines are produced in limited quantities, often extended through allocation membership.

This is where Rutherford reveals its soul: not in scale, but in precision and provenance. Fourth generation vintner, Steve Tonella, shares…

Dawn and dusk have always defined my memories of Rutherford.

First light over the western benchlands carries a quiet promise—the sense of a day just beginning to unfold. Some of my most meaningful moments have been early morning walks through the vineyard, the air still cool, the sun filtering softly through the marine layer. It’s a time of clarity and anticipation.

Guests to Napa can experience this same rhythm—morning walks or bicycle rides along the bucolic roads between Silverado Trail and Highway 29, where the valley feels untouched and unhurried.

Dusk, in contrast, is the golden hour of a day well spent. Whether by the pool, on a patio or at Auberge du Soleil, watching the fading light recede across Rutherford is a fleeting yet profound moment—one that lingers long after the day has passed.

Hikes that pair well with a wine weekend

Bothe-Napa Valley State Park / Coyote Peak Trail is the most balanced option for many visitors. California State Parks notes that Bothe has almost 10 miles of trails, and its official brochure describes Coyote Peak as a popular moderate climb, with scenic views of the valley and surrounding hills.

Oat Hill Mine Trail is the history-buff pick. Napa Outdoors describes it as an 8.3-mile trail following an old stagecoach route between Calistoga and Pope Valley, with 19th-century homestead remnants still visible along the way.

Robert Louis Stevenson State Park / Mount St. Helena is the ambitious option. California State Parks describes the park as 5,272 acres with trails to the summit of Mount St. Helena and sweeping views across Napa, Sonoma, and Lake counties.
